The newsletter, a way to keep your memory alive in the clients

Currently, fiber optic provides high-speed connections to many companies and individuals, opening a wide range of possibilities that ADSL did not allow.

With the connections by ADSL there were (and for many companies still exist) above all two problems: the first is that they do not provide a high speed. They can be enough to surf the Internet, manage email and other uses not excessively demanding, but when we want to take more advantage of the Internet connection, an ADSL line falls short. It is not appropriate for uses such as Voice over IP (VoIP), interconnection of offices, remote backup, sending emails with large attachments, etc., partly because of that low speed and partly due to the second problem: that by its own nature, the ADSL is asymmetric: we always have a speed between our computer and the Internet that is much lower than the speed of content downloading.

While the main need is the data traffic between the Internet and our computers, the ADSL may be sufficient, but at the moment we need a good rate of "upload" to the Internet, the ADSL clicks loudly.Fiber optics has solved this problem in many places, providing connections much faster than the ADSL and improving the speed of rise, which in many cases is equal to the descent.

Problem solved? So I do not think so. Like any other technology, fiber optic can have a breakdown that leaves your company incommunicado. The dependence on the Internet in companies is growing: if the Internet falls we are left without a phone, without email, if we can make and receive orders, without spending budgets, without ..., without ... and what is worse , customers may, given the impossibility of working with us, do business with the competition.

Another problem with fiber optics that you may not be aware of is that most companies have hired residential fiber optic (Fiber to the Home or FTTH). These connections are not guaranteed by the companies, neither in their speed nor in their availability. This means that although you usually have a good speed and always have an Internet connection, one day this may change and you have no right to complain. Finally, something that most companies do not care about: how secure is the installation of your broadband? In many cases I have seen that the interconnection boxes of the cables of the broadband connections are completely open, in transit areas or directly on the street. This facilitates sabotage and intrusions in a connection through which commercial information is very appealing. The top photo, which I made myself, corresponds to the telephone connection box of a building in the center of Pamplona. Apart from the visual chaos that can be observed, this box is in the parking lot of the building and has no closing mechanism, so that anyone can access it. For all these reasons it is important to have an alternative in case the fiber has problems. Having that backup connection will always be cheaper than the losses that it will cause us. Many companies that routinely use fiber optic in their day to day contract other connections to Internet backup, it is important that they use another different means (if they come from the same telephone exchange as fiber optics, they will probably fall if it falls) optical fiber).
