Super-study: The most fattening foods and those that help you lose weight


More than 120,000 people, twenty years of follow-up and results, as is necessary, have been published in one of the most prestigious medical journals, The New England Journal of Medicine.

The dietary changes that have occurred among the participants have been monitored and these changes have been related to the variation in weight. The link to the summary of the study is here, and you can download it in full pdf from this other link. The truth is that it is spectacular and has juicy and controversial graphics. For example, this one that relates variation of foods with variation of weight:



Reading the texts and seeing the results, this is the most striking:
  • Among all the monitored, the foods that have contributed most to increase obesity have been refined carbohydrates and starchy foods. The original text puts them in the center of the bullseye without contemplations and the chips remain as almost poison.
  • The sugary soft drinks are junk food that fatten an awful lot and those without sugar seem to be saved. The natural juices are rather pulling for bad if we want to keep the figure, the worst of the fruit, as I usually say.
  • The consumption of processed meat, red meat and butter also contribute to weight gain ... at least on a high-carbohydrate diet.
  • The increase of vegetables, nuts, fruits, whole grains and yogurt has been associated with weight loss.
  • It does not seem that alcohol makes you gain weight in a special way.
  • Quitting smoking makes you fat, but the original weight recovers after a short time.
  • Milk, seems to influence rather little and almost equal, either whole or skimmed.
And something important: The increase in physical activity seems to serve little to lose weight, have observed that what really influences is food. It could be said that, at best, it helps not to gain weight, or to gain weight more slowly. Unless you  crush, of course.  



Do you hear the famous phrase "there is no good or bad food, but good and bad diets"? Well, this study seems to arrive eager to load it.
